More than 85% of Americans consider themselves unprejudiced, but bias is nevertheless felt across American society. Discrimination based on race, religion, gender, age, ability, and sexual orientation has profound consequences. Much of discrimination may actually be unintentional; something called “implicit bias” that influences how we look at and interact with people different from us. Implicit bias can impact someone’s ability to get a job, a house, a loan or even a fair trial, perpetuating social and economic disparities. To end this bias, we must first be aware of it and then take steps to stop it in ourselves and others.
