Childhood Exposure to Violence

Nearly 60% of children are exposed to violence each year, and recent studies suggest that repeated exposure to violence can change the physical development of a child’s brain, leading to serious physical and emotional problems over time. But there’s hope. One of the biggest predictors of a child’s ability to be resilient in the face of trauma is by interacting with a caring, consistent adult. The first national campaign to raise awareness about the impact of childhood exposure to violence, Changing Minds encourages adults who regularly work with children to learn about the science of childhood trauma and the everyday gestures they can practice to help those who are affected heal.
